What is Organic Modern Style?

Organic Forms

One of the key features of the organic modern style is that it is organic. It feels natural and found. That means the shapes and materials reflect what we often see in nature, an in that it’s a little imperfect. You see a lot of round shapes in organic modern design as well as straight lines and rectangles which represent the more modern touches. You’re also likely to find curves from archways to sofas.

Natural Materials

The natural material element of organic modern design is what I believe captivates people the most. Using materials like wool, cotton, and linen to make the space feel very textural. Of course, you’ll see lots of wood as well but also concrete, plaster, iron, marble, etc. If it can be grown or forged from the earth, it has its place in organic modern design.

Earthy Color Palette

The world is your inspiration color wheel. Lots of greens, browns, blues and a whole host of light neutrals make up this design style. The use of an earthy color palette matches the use of raw and organic materials making the home feel even more grounded and comfortable.

Minimalist Inspired

Another way people have described organic modern style is “zen style” it feels very simple and refined. The organic modern style closely mimics Scandinavian design, California Casual, and Boho style. By simplifying your decor and introducing natural materials your often times letting the space speak for itself. That has a very calming and “zen-like” effect.

White Neutral Background

Setting the stage for those earthy colors is a light and bright neutral background. Typically the organic modern home would have white walls and play with many neutral color furnishings to allow those rich and diverse earth tones to really pop in the space. You’ll want to be careful with the particular white shades you choose and go with a warm white or soft white versus anything to harsh that would feel “clinical.”

Bring the Outdoors In

It wouldn’t be organic if we didn’t include nature in the design! One of my favorite features of organic modern is the emphasis on a pop of green. We have a saying at Homzie that no space is complete without a pop of green. In organic modern design large trees both faux and real are likely to make a statement in almost any room. They difference between organic modern and boho per say is the quantity of plants, keeping it to 1-2 pops of nature in a single space is plenty to make a statement.

Opt for Imperfect Raw Finishes

Like we said earlier organic shapes and forms reflect nature and nature isn’t full of perfect shapes but rough edges and imperfections. Those imperfections begin to tell a story in an organic modern design when they are put on display. This is especially true of wood which can be used all along the ceiling, hearth, kitchen range hood, dining table, you name it.

Play with Scale

Now, I’m going to let you in on THE secret to nailing the organic modern design style, just because you read this far - it’s all about scale! Increasing the scale of objects in your design plan helps create a sense of wonder in the space. When objects feel bigger you feel smaller and that gives you a sense of awe and reflection which is exactly what the organic modern style is designed to achieve. We love playing with the scale of light fixtures, trees or other nature elements, and then the furniture itself opting for something very minimal in style but large in scale.
