How to Figure Out Your Home Decor Style

Recognize You’re Not Just One Style

It’s true! Show me a photo of any home and I will show you at least 2-3 different design style elements within that space. Being a blend of different styles is a good thing! It gives you the flexibility to tailor your space to be more unique to your tastes and preferences. After all, the purpose of having a design style in the first place is to express yourself through your home decorating, right?

I like to think of your decorating style as a signature cocktail. You take a little bit of this and a little bit of that until you get a concoction tailored to your tastes and preferences. Or if we want to take it old school, think of it like the dial on a radio or tv, tuning into your style by emphasizing parts of one style over parts of another until it comes through loud and clear.

Look in Your Closet

Chances are you already have a clue as to what your decorating style is, and it’s hanging up in your closet! Your clothes can give you a lot of hints as to what you might like in home decor. What colors are you drawn towards? Neutrals? Bright colors? More monochromatic? What about textures do you tend to have more linen and cotton, or more structured & heavy materials? Then comes the actual wear of your clothes are they more casual or more corporate and sophisticated? Your home is an extension of your life, so how you dress likely flows naturally into how you show up in your home. While it’s not always an exact match it can certainly provide some helpful clues.

Look at Where You Shop Now

Most big box retailers have gained their large audience sizes by locking into a specific design aesthetic. You go to West Elm when you need more mid-century style furniture. You hit up Z-Gallerie if you’re wanting more of a glam look. You go to Serena and Lily to fit your coastal needs and Pottery Barn to capture the latest contemporary style that everyone is loving. The stores you are already shopping at can give you major hints as to the design styles you’re attracted to!
