How to choose the right rug for your space?

One of the most common design mistakes we see is clients selecting rugs that are the wrong size for their space. While it can be tempting to save a few dollars by purchasing a smaller rug, the impact it makes on the function of your space and overall design aesthetic isn’t really worth it.

That’s why we created this guide to help you confidently shop for the right size rug for your space. But it doesn’t stop there. Once you have the right size, you need to make sure it’s placed at the correct spot in the room to allow for maximum functionality and impact! This guide will tell you how to do just that.

Rug Size + Placement Guide: Living Room

When it comes to your living room, your area rug helps define the footprint of the entire space. This becomes especially important in open-concept spaces. The key to selecting the right size rug is to ensure that at least the front two legs of all of your furniture can fit on the rug. What we don’t want is the rug floating in the middle of the room.

If you have an exceptionally large living room space, don’t forget that you can layer rugs. Have your base rug be an inexpensive jute or sisal rug to fit the footprint of the room, and then select a slightly smaller patterned rug on top.

Rug Size + Placement Guide: Dining Room

There is a new trend out there to have no rug under your dining table, but for those who want to define their eating space, a rug is a must. The key to choosing a rug for your dining room is selecting one that extends two feet beyond each end of the table. You want to make sure when guests pull out their chairs to sit down, that their chair is still on the rug.

Rug Size + Placement Guide: Bedroom

When you wake up first thing in the morning the last thing you want to do is let your feet hit the cold floor. When it comes to choosing the right size area rug for your bedroom, regardless of the size of your bed, your rug should extend at least two feet around the sides and foot of the bed. Use the size guide below to choose the right size rug based on your bed size.
