How to Decorate a Blank Wall with Wall Art

“What should I put on this wall?” - Sound like you?

How do decorate a blank wall is one of the most common questions we get asked. It’s also one of the most common Homzie Design touches we help clients design for.

Decorating a large wall whether behind a sofa, bed, or in a hallway can be tricky, and intimidating. Mostly because there are so many options! But when it comes to decorating a blank wall in your home, there are a few simple guidelines that can help guide you towards that perfect piece of wall art or wall decor.

I’m going to show you a few simple tricks to help you see your blank walls differently - basic geometry.

How to Decorate a Rectangle Wall

This is the most common wall shape that you will encounter when decorating your home and often the one that confuses people the most. When choosing wall decor and art for a rectangle-shaped wall, imagine a smaller rectangle centered behind the bed sofa or other decor, THAT is the space you will be filling. A good rule of thumb is to select art or wall decor that fits the width of approximately 50 - 75% of the sofa or bed.

Choosing Art for Long Rectangular Walls

The decor you choose to put in that “imaginary rectangle” can represent a variety of shapes and sizes and they do not have to be a rectangle. You can select one single large piece of art or can fill that space with a variety of smaller pieces. Rectangular walls give you the most options to play with, so get creative with what you choose to fill your rectangle wall space.

How to Decorate a Tall Skinny Wall

Tall skinny walls are what you will likely see in a staircase landing or at the end of a long hallway or entryway. These blank walls provide the perfect spot to create big visual impact; since they are often “dead ends” where stairs or halls terminate.

When choosing art for tall skinny walls, once again you want to select art and decor that mimics the shape of the wall. Gallery walls are a good option for these spaces as they can be easily stacked on top of each other and provide something visually interesting for guests to admire.

Don’t be afraid to think outside of hanging something on the wall. These compact spaces also provide a great space to add a small console table, bench seat, table, baskets, or plants. Filling blank wall space can just as easily look like adding a small table and plant as it can wall art.

How to Decorate a Square Wall

Square walls are perhaps the most difficult to decorate. These spaces can be awkward to fill because most common wall art and decor that you can purchase from big-box retailers are rectangular vs square-shaped. While you can get creative and decorate your walls with asymmetrical gallery walls and still manage to keep the items in a square shape, it is more difficult.

Choosing Art for Square Shaped Walls

Like all of our examples previously, we need the wall art to mimic the wall shape. Framed art will be the easiest option, as you can readily find square frames with large mattes for a high-end look. You’ll also want to try large square-shaped wall art to help you fill in these more confining spaces.
