Upgrade Your Builder-Basic Lighting

This will ALWAYS be my go-to tip for making your home look more expensive and more custom. Fancy-looking light fixtures don’t have to cost you a fortune. There are plenty of quality dupes out there for high-end styles that can give your home the same look for a lot less. If you have the dreaded “boob light” - you know what I’m talking about, this is a must. It also doesn’t have to happen overnight! Even if you’re looking to update just one space, selecting a statement light fixture is sure to give you a return on design.

Select the Right Size Artwork for Your Space

Oh, this is a biggy! Almost every time we view a client’s home during a design call we see wall art or wall decor that isn’t the right scale for the space. Typically it’s way too small. Choosing art that is 50-70% of the width of your furniture or wall is a good starting point. Don’t forget you can also try budget-friendly hacks like digital art that you can have printed at your local Walgreens or CVS. I use this hack all the time when I’m in a need of a refresh but don’t feel like dropping hundreds of dollars. Here you can learn how to select the right size wall art for above your sofa and above your bed.

Hang Curtains High and Wide

If you want your space to look expensive - draw your eye up! Yup, hang your curtains as close to the ceiling as you can to give the illusion that your ceiling is taller than it actually is. Hanging your curtains 6-12” wider than your window will help your space look sophisticated and complete. Please, please, for me - make sure that your curtain panels “kiss the floor” the last thing we want is curtains that are too short in a space, making it look small and squatty. This tutorial will show you exactly how to properly hang your curtains. You don’t have to spend a lot on curtains either! You can find great high-quality curtains on Amazon, here are some of our favorites!

Choose Quality Pillow Inserts

If you’re not one to spend on pillow covers, and would rather shop what you can find from the latest Studio Mcgee collection at Target, that’s fine! Just be sure to replace the insert your pillows come with for slightly higher quality - this doesn’t have to break the bank either! We recommend faux-down alternative pillows like these. When choosing your insert always size up 2” from the size of your pillow cover for a snug fit. If you need help finding coordinating pillow covers here are some of our favorites!
